2011-12 UMass Lowell men's ice hockey schedule.

Schedule highlighted by 16 home dates, River Hawks open the season at Minnesota State

LOWELL, MA (July 26, 2011) – First-year Head Coach Norm Bazin and the River Hawks will make their debut at Minnesota State University on October 14 in the opening game of the 2011-12 season. UMass Lowell’s schedule features the usual 27 Hockey East contests and 16 regular season home dates, as announced by Bazin on Tuesday.

The 34-game slate is paced by seven non-conference clashes in addition to the annual league billing.

“This year’s schedule will provide an excellent opportunity for our team to be challenged by a variety of the nations’ top programs,” said Bazin. “We’re anxious for the season to begin.”

The River Hawks kick off the campaign with two games against the Mavericks of Mankato, Minn. at the Verizon Wireless Center on October 14-15. The trip marks the first visit to Minnesota State University in program history.

“A long road trip always provides a new team the opportunity to bond and we’re looking forward to that experience early,” Bazin noted. “Minnesota State’s physical style will be a tremendous challenge for our puck possession game.”

UMass Lowell then returns to the Northeast to host the University of Connecticut at the Conway Arena in Nashua, NH on October 18. All season tickets holders will receive free admission and ticket information for the general public will be released at a later date.

The River Hawks then christen the newly-renovated Tsongas Center and open their Hockey East schedule as they host 2010 NCAA Champion Boston College in the first leg of a home-and-home weekend on October 28.

Among other highlights on the schedule the River Hawks close out November with Alabama-Huntsville in the Tsongas Center on the 25th. The Huntsville game will be played at 4 p.m., followed by the annual Skate with the River Hawks.

To wrap up the first-half of the season, UMass Lowell enters the Toyota UConn Holiday Classic in Storrs, Conn. on December 29-30—facing Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the opening game. The Huskies will face Army in their Thursday night contest.

The River Hawks open the new year against the Russian Red Stars, a MHL All-Star Team, in an exhibition contest on January 9 at the Tsongas Center. The event will mark just the third time in program history UMass Lowell will battle a team from Russia: it hosted Sokol-Kiev in 1985 and Spartak in 1986.

Lastly, as part of an eight-game stretch in February, the River Hawks will play 2011 NCAA Tournament participant Merrimack College three times, highlighted by a pair of home dates on the 10th and 25th.

“The second half of our schedule presents more opportunities to play on home ice. We look forward to the tremendous fan support at the Tsongas Center as we march towards the Hockey East playoffs,” added Bazin.

Fan’s first chance to catch a glimpse of this year’s squad is on Saturday, October 8, when UMass Lowell hosts New Brunswick in an exhibition game at the Tsongas Center.
