The Plant a Row for the Hungry Middlesex County campaign is giving away locally grown tomato and pepper plants. The 2011 Plant a Row for the Hungry campaign focuses on creating caring gardens, sharing gardens, and community gardens to aid food security. In 2010, home gardeners donated over 1,000 pounds of garden fresh produce to the Merrimack Valley Food Bank’s Mobile Pantry Program that delivers groceries to home-bound seniors and disabled residents of greater Lowell, as well as Lowell Transitional Living Center and the Open Pantry of Greater Lowell.
Plant a Row for the Hungry (PAR) is a people-helping-people program, designed to assist in feeding the hungry in communities around the country, and helping to promote gardening. The Plant a Row for the Hungry Middlesex County campaign is one of several campaigns running nationally at any given time. Launched in 2008, the Middlesex County campaign was created to promote community gardening , giving a hand-up to citizens by providing seeds and plants as an incentive to garden and share their excess harvest with neighbors in need.
