River Hawks take on Adelphi in NE-10 men's semifinals.

Rematch of 2010 NE-10 Championship Set for Thursday at 7 p.m.

LOWELL (March 1, 2011) – In a rematch of the 2010 Northeast-10 Championship game, #6 UMass Lowell will host #7 Adelphi in the NE-10 Semifinal on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Costello Gymnasium.  Both teams earned upset victories in the Quarterfinal on Monday to send them to the Semifinal Round.

UMass Lowell, fresh off its 20th win of the season, stands at 20-8 on the year, while Adelphi has earned an 18-10 clip overall.

The River Hawks own a 15-6 all-time record in the Northeast-10 Tournament and have made the post-season 10 of the last 11 seasons.  UMass Lowell is undefeated in the NE-10 Semifinal, going 4-0 in each of its four previous appearances.

The squad earned the sixth seed in this year’s tournament with a 14-8 conference record and currently stands at 20-8 on the year.  Adelphi boasts an 18-10 clip on the year and earned its seventh seed with a 12-10 mark in NE-10 action.

“It’s déjà vu all over again,” said Head Coach Greg Herenda.  “Coming home to play is great, but Adelphi is a very good team and they are very well coached.  It will be a great battle of two teams that really defend.”

The River Hawks are 1-1 against Adelphi in post-season play with the series’ lone NE-10 Tournament tilt coming in last year’s Title Game.  The No. 7 River Hawks hosted the No. 9 Panthers and walked away with a 73-58 victory and the program’s third NE-10 Championship.  The only other meeting in the post-season came in the 2002 NCAA East Regional Championship, which Adelphi, then a member of the East Coast Conference, won.

This marks the second time this season that the River Hawks and Panthers have squared off; UMass Lowell was victorious in the earlier meeting on Jan. 13, walking away with the 60-55 win.  The teams battled in Costello Gymnasium as UMass Lowell captured its sixth straight win over Adelphi in the series history.

The River Hawks are coming off a 79-69 win at Stonehill on Monday evening and have won 10 of the last 12, dropping a pair of regular season games to top-ranked Bentley and Stonehill on the road during that stretch.

UMass Lowell’s offense, averaging 71.9 PPG is led by freshman point guard Akeem Williams (Brockton, Mass.) with 18.1 PPG.  Not far behind is sophomore Matt Welch (Lowell, Mass.) with 14.4.  Nearing the double-digit mark are sophomore Romeo Diaz (Methuen, Mass.) with 9.8 a game and NE-10 Rookie of the Week Antonio Bivins (Miami, Fla.) who averages 9.5  Junior Robbie Walton (South Boston, Mass.) leads the conference in steals with 2.6 a game and averages a team-high 4.0 assists.

Adelphi is coming off a 55-52 victory over No. 2 American International in Springfield on Monday evening.  The squad is led by four Panthers averaging double-figures, led by NE-10 Player of the Week Richard Byrd with 15.4 PPG.  David Akinyooye averages 13.0 PPG and leads the team with 8.9 RPG, as well.  Guard Richard Harkins leads the NE-10 in assist-turnover ratio with 5.0 assists and 2.5 turnovers per game for a 2.0 ratio.

UMass Lowell owns the 7-3 advantage in the all-time series between the teams and has captured six straight wins against the Panthers, dating back to the fall of 2002.

The winner of Thursday’s game will face the winner of the No. 1 Bentley vs. No. 4 Saint Rose game that will be held simultaneously in Waltham.  The championship game will be hosted by the highest remaining seed on Saturday afternoon.

“I hope that the students, our fans and alums rally and come out for this Semifinal game,” said Herenda.  “My guys play so hard it’s a very exciting team to watch.  Costello should be rocking on Thursday night.”

Tickets for the game are $7 for adults, $4 for children (12 and under) and senior citizens, while students are granted $1 admission with a valid student ID.

For those unable to attend, live stats are available on www.GoRiverHawks.com.  The game will also be broadcast by the Pack Network and can be seen live on www.Northeast10.tv.
