According to an article appearing in today’s edition of the Albany Times Union, the AHL’s Lowell Devils apparently will no longer be playing in Lowell, Massachusetts beginning in the 2010-2011 season. The Devils current lease to play its games at the Tsongas Center expires on June 30th, and the article cites a source that said the team presented a letter of intent to move to Albany, New York. The minor league affiliate of the NHL’s New Jersey Devils has made Lowell its home since the 2006 season, and was previously known as the Lowell Lock Monsters.

The Lowell Devils are coming off of one of their strongest seasons in its history, having made the Calder Cup playoffs for the first time this season. The Devils lost in 5 games to the Worcester Sharks in the first round of the playoffs. Albany currently has a AHL team known as the Albany River Rats, but the team is scheduled to move to Charlotte, North Carolina at the conclusion of the season.
