Ayer Lofts Art Gallery is one of several art galleries built in former industrial buildings in the city of Lowell, MA. Ayer Lofts is comprised of two industrial buildings built in the late 1800s. The Barker Building had several commercial and light industrial uses prior to its conversion, and the J.C. Ayer Company Building was home to one of Lowell’s largest medicine manufacturers.
In 1999, these two buildings went through an extensive cleanup and rehabilitation effort costing a close to four million dollars, and 49 loft-style artist units were created, allowing local artists a place to live and work.
Today, Ayer Lofts Art Gallery is home to several artists who work in a variety of media. Ayer Lofts artists participate in Lowell Open Studios each year, allowing visitors to meet the artists and view their works. Additionally, Ayer Lofts plays host to a number of art community events throughout the year.
