Lowell Philharmonic Orchestra

Lowell Philharmonic is Lowell's community orchestra group.

Founded in 1987 by Lowell Physician Dr. Peter Gorlin, the Lowell Philharmonic Orchestra was originally established as a way for Dr. Gorlin to play his cello in a community orchestra, which was known as the Lowell Community Symphony Orchestra. The group began performing a little over a year later, and in the following three years, the Orchestra began to hold regular concerts for the community.

While the main focus has been on community performances, the LPO has also been a strong proponent of bringing young people into the fold to learn about and appreciate orchestra music. In 1991, the Orchestra started the Lowell Philharmonic Youth Symphony Orchestra, which is opened to children and teens who are able to read sheet music. Today, local string students are invited to participate in the LPO’s annual Winter concert. The Philharmonic also holds the Jeanne Selander Memorial Student Concert Competition, a competition for young musicians in New England to audition to play with the Orchestra in the annual Sping concert.

Lowell Philharmonic Mission

The mission of the orchestra is to enrich the culture of the greater Lowell community through free classical music concerts. Through these concerts, we give local musicians an opportunity to perform in an orchestra and share their love of music with the community.

Our particular focus is to encourage young musicians and give them rehearsal and performing opportunities that will help them grow musically. As part of our regular concert season, we invite young string students to perform with us in March. In the winter, we hold the Jeanne Selander Memorial Concerto Competition, named for one of the original members of the orchestra. This competition is open to young musicians through high school age. The winner plays a concerto with the orchestra at our May concert.
