Western Avenue is an important part of the artistic community in Lowell, Massachusetts. The Studios are comprised of two converted brick mill buildings that are home to 245 work only studios. The Lofts consist of 50 live/work units. Together there are almost 400 artists on site. Because of the large number of the artists in one location, WA has become the center for Lowell’s thriving artistic community. The site is home to The Loading Dock Gallery – a cooperative gallery run by the WA artists, as well as The Onyx Room – an event space that is run by The Miracle Providers NE.
Western Avenue Studios provides the regions most affordable rental studios to artists who work in a variety of media, including paint, glass, ceramic, metal, sculpture, photography, wood working, and other art forms. The Loading Dock Gallery organizes a lecture series for artists to attend on a variety of art-related subjects. Many artists in the building hold classes in their studios – teaching individual students and as well group classes.
Artists at Western Avenue Studios are involved in a wide range of art programs within the city of Lowell to promote art, and are represented in galleries throughout New England. Many artists participate in the Lowell Open Studios program, where art galleries and studios around Lowell are opened to the public for a weekend. The WA Artists Association hosts First Saturday Open Studios every month of the year, where the public can visit Western Avenue to meet the artists and talk about their work. WA hosts Gifts from the HeART and Holiday Open Studios, amongst other events. The site is used as a venue for many Lowell events held throughout the year.
