Western Avenue Studios is an important part of the artistic community in Lowell, Massachusetts. The Studios are located in two converted brick mill buildings. WAS originally opened on a single floor in 2005, and since then, it has expanded to provide more space for additional artists. Currently, there are over 120 studios and over 160 artists who work in Western Avenue Studios.
Western Avenue Studios provides reduced rent studios to artists who work in a variety of media, including paint, glass, ceramic, metal, graphic design, and other art forms. Because of the vast space of the studios, WAS has become the center for Lowell’s thriving artistic community. Western Avenue Studios Advertising and organizes a lecture series for their artists to attend on a variety of art-related subjects.
Artists at Western Avenue Studios are involved in a wide range of art programs within the city of Lowell to promote art. Many artists participate in the Lowell Open Studios program, where art galleries and studios around Lowell are opened to the public for a weekend. WAS artists also participate in the First Saturday Open Studios, where the public can visit Western Ave. Studios the first Saturday each month. WAS also sponsored the Summer Art Program for Children, and the site is used as a venue for many Lowell events held throughout the year..
