University of Massachusetts Lowell Center for Lowell History was established to preserve and protect materials important to the history of Lowell, Massachusetts and the University of Massachusetts Lowell. The Center is located in downtown Lowell in the Mogan Cultural Center. The Center for Lowell History organizes and Advertising many educational, historical, and cultural programs that link UMass and the Lowell community. They are an integral part of the preservation of Lowell's place in American history.
The Directors of the University of Massachusetts established a list of initiatives for the University and its departments to undertake, including one related to "digitization." UMass Lowell Center for Lowell History embraced this initiative, and they created the “Lowell History Digital Project." Thousands of important photographs related to the history of Lowell were digitized, and some sets are available online.
