More than 300 runners will participate in the annual Chris Sullivan 5K Memorial Run, an event that honors the life of the late army captain from Princeton, Mass., who was an UMass Lowell ROTC member and 1998 mechanical engineering graduate. Organized by UMass Lowell alumni volunteers from Sullivan’s fraternity, Sigma Phi Omicron through the university’s Office of Alumni Relations, the event will bring runners on a course through UMass Lowell’s East and North campuses along both sides of the Merrimack River. The race is raising money for the university’s Pershing Fund, which provides financial assistance to student-veterans and their families; the UMass Lowell Chris Sullivan Memorial Scholarship Fund; the National Education for Assistance Dog Services (NEADS) organization, which places service animals with returning veterans; and the Americas Fund, which aids veterans injured after Sept. 11. Sullivan was killed in 2005 in Iraq after an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. The race’s entrance fee is $30 per runner ($40 on race day) or $15 for veterans and students who present a valid ID. All runners are welcome.
