Former River Hawk defenseman Darryl Green tabbed as assistant coach to men’s ice hockey team

LOWELL, MA (July 26, 2010) – Darryl Green, a former UMass Lowell defenseman and head coach at Nashua High School North, was named to the UMass Lowell hockey staff, announced head coach Blaise MacDonald.

Green, who played under MacDonald for two seasons, replaces former assistant Shawn McEachern, who recently accepted the head coaching position at The Rivers School after two seasons with UMass Lowell.

“Darryl brings an unparalleled level of passion, commitment and understanding of what it takes to be student-athlete at UMass Lowell,” said MacDonald. “Even more importantly, he knows what it takes to be a Division I hockey player.”

“Darryl brings great experience having been a successful high school head coach and working with our staff three years ago in a volunteer role as the Director of Hockey Operations. In addition, he has great knowledge of the way we play defense and will work closely with our young defensive core.”

The River Hawks will look to reload after a successful 2009-10 campaign. UMass Lowell posted an overall record of 19-16-4 and a 12-11-4 mark in conference play to tie for third place, the team’s highest finish in Hockey East since 1995-96.

Among the key players returning for the new campaign, the River Hawks retain the services of senior Scott Campbell (Navan, Ont.), who has led the team in scoring in each of the last two seasons and will serve as captain in 2010-11.

“I wanted to be a college hockey coach and what better place than where I went to school,” said Green. “When the opportunity arose, I jumped at the chance to be apart of this program again.”

“I’m excited to work with the defense and the power play units. As a coaching staff we will have them prepared to win every game.”

Prior to joining the River Hawk staff, Green had been teaching at Nashua High School North for the past five years and spent last season as the head coach of the Titans’ ice hockey program.

A 2003 graduate of UMass Lowell, Green earned his degree in Liberal Arts. As a member of the River Hawk hockey team, he compiled 46 points on 13 goals and 33 assists, despite sitting out his freshman year. The team enjoyed its greatest success during his junior season as UMass Lowell posted a 22-13-3 record and reached the Hockey East semi-finals.

After college Green played professionally for two seasons, skating with the Wichita Thunder of the Central Hockey League in 2003-04 and the Pee-Dee Pride of the ECHL in 2004-05. Green then went onto serve as the Director of Hockey Operations for the River Hawks in 2007-08.

Before attending UMass Lowell, Green starred for the Chatham Maroons of the Western Ontario Junior Hockey League, WOJHL, leading them to back-to-back WOJHL Junior ‘B’ Championships in 1998 and 1999. Green was voted as the league’s Defensive Most Valuable Player for the 1997-98 season.

A native of Chatham, ONT, Green currently resides in Milford, NH with his wife, Nikki, and his daughter, Carly, 2.
