Demographics for the city of Lowell, Massachusetts.

Lowell is the fourth largest city in Massachusetts with a population of 105,137 as of the 2000 census.  Approximately one quarter of the population are minors, while 10% of city residents are 65 years or older.  More than 70% have completed high school and 18% have earned a bachelor's degree or orher higher education degree.

Lowell is an ethnically diverse city, with 62.5% of the population being Caucasian, 16.5% Asian, 14% Latino, 4.2% Black, and 2.5% other ethnicities.  Lowell has the second largest Cambodian population in the United States.

The median household income in the city was $39,192 and $45,901 for a family. Males had a median income of $33,554 and females $27,399. The per capita income for the city is $17,557.

Of the 37,887 households, 34% have children under the age of eighteen living with them, 40.1% are married couples living together, 17.4% have a female householde with no husband present, and 36.7% are non-families. 29% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.3% have someone living alone over the age of 65. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.35.

The median age is 31.4 years, lower than the US average. The population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of eighteen, 11.9% from eighteen to twenty-four, 32.5% from twenty-five to forty-four, 17.(% from forty-five to sixty-four, and 10.8% sixty-five years of age or older. For every 100 females there are 97.1 males. For every 100 females age eighteen and over, there are 94.1 males.

The city’s unemployment rate stands at 5.3%.  Lowell currently has approximately 16.8% of the population living at below the poverty line.

Local crime rates significantly decreased in 2000 compared with the statistics in the mid-1990s. Lowell currently enjoys the reputation of being one of the safest cities of its size in the United States.
