Air Force Jet Flyover, Flag-Raising, Panel Pay Tribute to Service by Students, Alumni

Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011

10:30 a.m. Flag-Raising, Flyover

12:30 p.m., Veterans Panel

UMass Lowell will observe Veterans Day with events including a flag-raising ceremony to pay tribute to the sacrifices and service of the university’s more than 600 student veterans, as well as alumni, Veterans Alumni Hall of Fame inductees and others with military service from throughout the region. The ceremony will feature a flyover by U.S. Air Force F-15 jets and will be followed by a panel discussion featuring students and alumni who are veterans and will talk about their military experience.

Among those scheduled to speak at the flag-raising are U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas; UMass Lowell Chancellor Marty Meehan; and Col. Gregory Boyle, former commander of the Marine Wounded Warrior Regiment; and student veterans.

Participants in the events also include:

·       Christian Elwood, who is the president of the UMass Lowell Student Veterans Organization;

·       Squadron N-12 of the National Society of Pershing Rifles, which served as an elite drill team from 1962 to 1974 at Lowell Technological Institute. Starting in 2012, each veteran who graduates from UMass Lowell will wear the blue-and-white cord of the Pershings on the right shoulder of their graduation gown, as a mark of the esprit de corps that characterized the group. Representing Squadron N-12 will be former U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Peter Maravelias of Wakefield and Robert Nadeau of Brentwood, N.H;

·       UMass Lowell 2011 Veterans Alumni Hall of Fame inductee Robert Meister of Maynard, who graduated from Lowell Technical Institute in 1948. He will speak during the panel discussion about his service in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II;

·       UMass Lowell 2011 Veterans Alumni Hall of Fame inductee James Derby of Lawrence, who graduated from Lowell Technical Institute. Derby, who flew 24 missions with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, will also be a panelist.

The flag-raising and flyover will be held on the Cumnock Hall lawn. The veterans panel will be held in the Cumnock Hall Trustees Room, second floor, UML North, 31 University Ave., Lowell.
