The Lowell Quilt Festival recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, and it continues to draw crowds of quilt lovers, artists, and teachers each August. Typically held at larger venues throughout the city of Lowell, the Lowell Quilt Festival brings together juried works from talented artists from across the country, and all proceeds collected financially benefit the New England Quilt Museum.
During the most recent Quilt Festival, a display of 150 antique quilts that date back to the early 1800s was presented. The Pilgrim/Roy collection of antique quilts is extraordinary, and the examples on display were all crowd pleasers.
In addition to the quilts on display, the Lowell Quilt Festival brings in quilt experts and teachers in all areas of quilting, and throughout the four days of the festival, classes are available on all subjects related to quilting. You can find classes on hand quilting, machine quilting, quilt designing, scrap quilting, and classes that teach specific styles or patterns popular in quilting. The teachers who participate in the classes come from all over the United States to present lectures on their area of expertise, and they bring with them experience as quilters, artists, designers, and authors.
Visitors to the Lowell Quilt Festival may bring their own treasured quilts to be appraised. Experts are on hand to examine the quilts and help place a value on them. There is a small additional fee for the appraisal, with all proceeds benefiting the New England Quilt Museum. Visitors are required to pre-register for an appraisal, and they are welcome to bring any quilt they please.
Over the course of the four-day event, quilt auctions are held, with festival attendees invited to participate. The live auction is a highlight of the festival for many visitors. Participants may bid on items such as quilts, books, fabrics, garments, bags, machines, and other quilting related accessories. There is also a silent auction for miniature quilts, produced and donated by some of the most talented quilt makers in New England.
In addition to all of the beautiful quilts, the festival attracts vendors from throughout New England and beyond. Vendors selling everything from finished quilts, fabrics, sewing machines, crafts, and all types of quilting accessories can be found at the Festival.
