Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity creates affordable home ownership.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Lowell is a nonprofit organization that was established locally in 1991. The organization works to create home ownership opportunities to people in need, by building housing in the Merrimack Valley and Greater Lowell communities.

Habitat for Humanity relies on volunteer labor, financial contributions, and donations of building materials to build and renovate houses in Greater Lowell. Although the houses are fairly moderate, they are perfect for families in need. Homes built by Habitat for Humanity volunteers are sold to families at no profit (usually costing between $125,000 – $150,000), and the new homeowner is given affordable no-interest loans to ensure that they are able to keep their new homes. The mortgage payments that are collected from the families are used to finance the building of more homes for other needy families. Homeowners are also required to participate in the building process by given a considerable amount of their own time and effort.

Since its founding, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Lowell has built and/or renovated 20 homes in Lowell, Massachusetts and the surrounding communities of Billerica, Concord, Reading, and Westford. Local Habitat projects have placed more than 50 people into quality housing that is affordable to the new homeowners.

Habitat for Humanity seeks volunteers of all skills to help participate in the building or renovation of homes in Greater Lowell (in addition to financial contributions). Habitat for Humanity employees provide the necessary safety and job training on the day of a build, and volunteers are assigned jobs based on their own comfort level. The organization will provide all materials for the volunteers, but volunteers are permitted to bring their own tools if they would be more comfortable using them.

This is a great organization that is helping to build Greater Lowell both physically and in spirit.
