Lowell Quilt Festival

The Lost Heroes Art Quilt at Lowell Quilt Festival.

The Lowell Quilt Festival is honored to be hosting the Lost Heroes art quilt this year as a special feature, a massive (5 ½ feet by 15 feet) and moving tribute to our country’s heroes fallen in Iraq and Afghanistan. Created by artist Julie Feingold in 2009, the quilt is topped by the statement, “Without a witness, they will disappear”, highlighting Feingold’s determination to never forget those who sacrificed their lives in the fight for their country.

Come and see the quilt installed by an honor guard during the Quilt Festival opening ceremony at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium on Thursday, August 12, at 9:30 a.m. This exhibit is a ‘must see’ and the Lowell Quilt Festival is honored to be hosting this special quilt for a few days. You may even have an opportunity to meet the artist, who often stands near this emotional piece, answering questions and sharing in memories with passers by.

In this carefully composed collage of images and mixed media, Feingold takes the quilting approach into the realm of conceptual art. In her quilt she not only bases her art form on a craft tradition that is rooted in American history, she also exposes a social document that invokes the primal realities of war, and the personal feelings of loss of the families.
