UMass Lowell River Hawks athletics teams.
University of Massachusetts Lowell athletic teams are nicknamed the “River Hawks” because of Lowell’s close proximity to the Merrimack River. The University’s teams compete in a variety of NCAA Division II sports, with the exception of men’s ice hockey, which competes in NCAA Division I.
UMass Lowell’s men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, ice hockey, track and field, and soccer, while the women compete in basketball, cross country, track and field, field hockey, soccer, softball, and volleyball. Past UMass Lowell NCAA champions include the 1988 men’s basketball team, the 1991 men’s cross country team, the ice hockey team (three championships), and the 2005 field hockey team.
