Middlesex Community College and Keep Sound Minds (KSM) will co-sponsor a FREE mental health awareness seminar, titled “What to Do if Someone You Care For Has Severe Mental Illness: Practical Answers,” to be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, in MCC’s Federal Building Assembly Room, 50 Kearney Square, Lowell.

The seminar will provide students, families and professionals with practical answers about how to recognize when someone is experiencing a mental-health crisis, how to get help, and how to provide support. Attendees will also learn about the resources available to assist mentally ill individuals and their families.

A panel discussion of mental-health experts will also address how to handle a crisis situation. Panelists will include: Everett clinical psychologist Dr. Janice Tedford, who has significant experience in crisis assessment and suicide prevention; James Lahiff, a psychiatric case manager and Lowell Police Training Academy crisis intervention instructor; psychiatric and mental health manager Jennifer Barnes, RN-BC; Aimee Rusman, director of MCC’s TRIO Program for Student Achievement and a nationally certified rehabilitation counselor for mentally ill individuals living in the community, and KSM president and co-founder Ken Lambert.

KSM is a New Hampshire-based nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing society’s understanding and management of mental-health issues through training and advocacy at the regional and statewide level.

Free public parking (with MCC validation) is available in the Lower Locks Garage, 90 Warren St., Lowell. For directions to Middlesex and parking information, visit the MCC website: www.middlesex.mass.edu
