KEYNOTE PRESENTATION
“Return of the Shortnose Sturgeon to the Merrimack River”
Micah Kieffer, USGS and Jessica Pruden, NMFS

Micah Kieffer is a fisheries biologist with the USGS and has studied sturgeon populations in the Merrimack River since the late 1980’s. Jessica Pruden is the Shortnose
Sturgeon Recovery Coordinator with the National Marine Fisheries Service.

Shortnose sturgeon grow to 4-6 feet long and can live to be 60 years old. They spend much of the year foraging for food in the lower portion of the Merrimack River before visiting Haverhill in the spring to lay their eggs. It was once thought that the species was on the brink of extinction, with fewer than 100 left in the river. However, recent studies indicate that the population appears to be on the rebound.
