
Third annual One Lowell World Cup soccer tournament will be held August 1-2, 2009
Lowell, MA. - The 3rd Annual World Cup will celebrate a shared passion for the game of soccer while raising money to help immigrants in Lowell. It will feature excellent teams and exciting games with some of the best players in our region. The Cup is more than a weekend of fine soccer at Cawley Stadium in Lowell; it is a celebration of the contributions immigrants have made to our community.
In addition to the games, the tournament will feature food, music, and art from around the world. 16 teams from all around the world including Ireland, USA, Portugal, Brazil, Cambodia, Vietnam, and England (among others) will compete to be crowned champions of Lowell and of the World.
New Event for 2009: Kids Penalty Kick Competion. Entry is free!
New to the ONE Lowell World Cup 2009 is the Penalty Kick Competition! Give your child the chance to watch high level soccer and also be part of the action. Tournament organizers are holding a PK Competition that will decide the best penalty takers in the Merrimack Valley!
The age groups are Boys Under 10, Under 12, Under 14 and Girls Under 10, Under 12, Under 14. There is a prize of $100 for each age group. The Penalties are "miss and you're out winner stays on" so it is sure to be exciting with Boys and Girls lined up by age to give it their all!
This competition will be held on Sunday the 2nd of August, the 2nd day of the Tournament and will take place behind the goal at Cawley Stadium while the adult World Cup games are being played.
The best 5 PK takers or in other words the remaining 5 in each group will then take penalties against a high quality Goalkeeper on the main field in front of a large crowd in the main stand.
