Wandering Feet exhibit at the Loading Dock Gallery in Lowell opens on May 27
Lowell, MA - Wander over to The Loading Dock Gallery to travel vicariously to Latin America. Pastel painter Bill Tyers and photographer Jack Holmes capture the essence of locations from Mexico to Colombia to Peru in their exhibit Wandering Feet.
Bill Tyers’ pastel paintings take us to Colombia, where he has traveled on two occasions. He says “It is a beautiful place and the work I did for this show focuses on the friendly people and areas such as the small neighborhoods, the lush landscapes along the roadways and the historic region of Cartagena.” His paintings were created from drawings, photographs and video taken throughout the coastal town of Cartagena and also a region of cities and towns called Valle del Cauca which is surrounded by the Andes Mountains.
Tyers works almost exclusively with pastel “because it offers the color of painting, with the immediacy of drawing. Pastel’s rich, vibrant color makes it the perfect medium to capture the exquisite scenery and colorful towns I visited in Colombia.” Tyers has been drawing for most of his life and it is the key element in his work whether realistic or with subjects that become abstract during the drawing process.
Travel further abroad through Jack Holmes’ exquisite photographs of Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Ecuador, and Peru. Holmes says, “National Geographic photographers have inspired me to travel and experience other cultures. These images were collected in Latin America between May 2007 and April 2009. I really enjoy the warmth of color, language, and people in Latin America.”
Holmes’s experience as a chemist and high school science teacher cultivated an attention to detail that has carried over into his photography. He records the sights, patterns, and scenes that he finds interesting, primarily using a digital camera. Holmes’ passion for travel photography has taken him to Mexico for a workshop with National Geographic’s David Alan Harvey and Raul Touzon, to the White Mountains with ecophotographer, Jerry Monkman, and to Baja Sur with world-leading whale photographer, Flip Nicklin.
Whether admiring one of Holmes’ photographs or one of Tyers’ pastels, you will be transported by an observant tour guide who will share with you the color, feeling, and wonder of an unfamiliar place. You would never guess from the striking locations captured in the artwork that Holmes is an Andover resident and Tyers is a Lowell native and a Milford, New Hampshire resident.
Wandering Feet will be showing in The Loading Dock Gallery at Western Avenue Studios, 122 Western Avenue, 2nd floor of the A-Mill from May 27 – June 21, 2009. There will be a reception for the artists June 5 from 6-9pm. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 11am to 4:30pm. For information about the exhibit see www.theloadingdockgallery.com or call Maxine Farkas at 978 349-8069.
