Due to an illness, Rosie Ledet’s scheduled performance at the Lowell Folk Festival has been replaced with a performance by Jeffrey Broussard & The Creole Cowboys. Although Rosie will be missed, Festival-goers will not be disappointed with the performance by Jeffrey Broussard & The Creole Cowboys, who are based out of Lafayette, Louisiana. They will have several performances at the Festival, which will be held in Lowell, Massachusetts from July 25-27th. See the Lowell Folk Festival’s website for more details.

A hot, new band has made its appearance on Southwest Louisiana’s zydeco scene, delivering great, pack-the-floor renditions of Creole classics as well as its own brand of contemporary zydeco. Jeffery Broussard & The Creole Cowboys features the masterful accordion and singing of front man Jeffery Broussard and the exciting Creole fiddle of D’Jalma Garnier III. Drawing inspiration from earlier Creole music legends like fiddler Canray Fontenot and Jeffery’s father, accordion player Delton Broussard, Jeffery Broussard & The Creole Cowboys are interpreting this musical legacy for a new generation, and presenting it with contemporary flair.

An accordion-led dance style that fused older Creole music with blues and R&B, zydeco emerged during the post-WWII years. Its development and popularity can largely be credited to Clifton Chenier (1925-1987). Delton Broussard and the Lawtell Playboys, Jeffrey’s father’s band, was one of the pioneering zydeco ensembles and in addition to Delton’s driving accordion, featured the legendary Creole fiddler Calvin Carriere.

If you are going to be in Lowell, Massachusetts for the Lowell Folk Festival, you don’t want to miss the performance of Jeffrey Broussard & The Creole Cowboys.

“Where, after all, does respect for human rights begin? In small places, close to home; in the everyday world of human beings-the neighborhoods they live in, the schools or colleges they attend, the factories, farms or offices where they work, where every man, woman, and child seeks to have equal justice and opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.”

-Adapted from a speech by Mrs. Roosevelt in 1958 at the United Nations

Eleanor Roosevelt, whose life and influence have spanned the greater part of the 20th century, is brought to life by Elena Dodd, in a one-woman theater performance. In Elena Dodd’s portrayal, Mrs. Roosevelt’s distinctive speech and dynamic personality enliven this interactive program for audiences. Ms. Dodd graduated from Wellesley College; she holds an M.A. in American Literature from Boston University and an M.F.A. in Writing from Vermont College of Union Institute and University.

This FREE one hour program, as part of this summer’s Lowell Lyceum Series, takes place at the Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center, 246 Market Street, Lowell, Massachusetts from 6:30pm -7:30pm on Tuesday, August 5th

For more information on this and other Lyceum Series programs, please give the park a call at (978) 970-5000, or visit the website at www.nps.gov/lowe.

Kirk Boott, among Lowell’s original incorporators, returns to the City. Anna Whistler, James McNeil’s mother, speaks of her famous son. You won’t want to miss these and many other historic figures through July at sites in the park and Lowell’s historic downtown district. Students from Lowell High School are portraying these famous characters as part of the Youth Theater Program under the aegis of the Spindle City Corps through Community Teamwork Inc. and in partnership with Lowell National Historical Park. This new program is in its first season and already visitors are delighting in their surprise encounters with costumed figures on the historic cobblestoned streets.

In addition to meeting and greeting you on the street or on the trolley, half-hour formal performances are scheduled at Boarding House Park for Wednesday, July 16th and Thursday, July 17th after the Children’s Concert (approximately at noon). As part of this summer’s Youth Theater Program ten students have researched or created their own composite characters from Lowell’s heyday. Staged by Marianne Corcoran, an educator at Lowell High School, this program serves as a complement to the park’s newly re-invigorated costumed interpreter’s program, which is back by popular demand. This summer you will also see costumed park staff at sites such as the Francis Gate complex and other locations.

From Noon to 2:30 pm the Youth Theater Program will be in the park on the following dates: July 16, 17, 19, 21, and 23. During the Lowell Folk Festival they are scheduled to appear downtown on Saturday, July 26 and Wednesday July 30th from 1:00-4:00 pm. There is a special evening performance on Friday August 1st in the Boott Mills Courtyard at 7:00 pm preceding the Summer Music Series Concert. All performances are free.

For more information on this and other park programs, please give the park a call at (978) 970-5000, or visit the website at www.nps.gov/lowe. Photos available.

Lowell was listing along with Newburyport, MA, Albany, NY, Saranac Lake, NY, Atlantic City, NJ, Gettysburg, PA, and several popular destinations. According to the article,

The role of New England mill towns in the industrial revolution — an absorbing and sometimes heartbreaking story — is explained at the Lowell National Historical Park (www.nps.gov/lowe; 978-970-5000). Travel through a large, now-picturesque brick mill complex from the 1830s, either by boat on the canals that once supplied power to the mills or by hopping on and off trolleys that run year round.

Lowell has become a destination city, boasting great tourist attractions, a vibrant arts scene, first class restaurants, wonderful architecture, and a welcoming community eager to please visitors. Lowell is also host to a multitude of conferences and conventions, including the recently concluded Massachusetts Democratic Convention and the 2008 NAHSL conference in October.
