Niki Tsongas

Tsongas represents the Mass. 5th Congressional District.

Congresswoman Niki Tsongas represents Massachusetts’s 5th congressional district, serving Lowell, Massachusetts and the surrounding communities. Tsongas is is the widow of US Senator Paul Tsongas who was originally from Lowell. Tsongas was the first woman elected to Congress from Massachusetts in 25 years, she is also the first woman to represent Massachusetts’ 5th Congressional district in 46 years.

Born Nicola “Niki” Sauvage in 1946, she graduated from high school in Japan in 1964 while her father was stationed at an American Air Force base overseas. Tsongas spent a year at Michigan State before transferring to Smith College to finish her degree. Tsongas later earned her law degree from Boston University, and she founded Lowell’s first all-female law office.

In 1969, Tsongas met her future husband, and they married in 1969, settling in Lowell, Massachusetts. With Paul, the couple had three daughters, Ashley, Katina, and Molly. In addition to her legal work, Tsongas worked was also the Dean of External Affairs at Middlesex Community College, was a Board Member of Fallon Community Health Plan, and she served on the Lowell Civic Stadium and Arena Commission.

In 2007, Congressman Marty Meehan resigned his position in Massachusetts’ 5th Congressional District in order to become Chancellor at University of Massachusetts Lowell. Niki Tsongas defeated four opponents and was elected in a special election to complete Meehan’s term in office. Not only is this special because of the history associated with her election, but this is also the Congressional seat once held by her late husband Paul prior to his election to the US Senate.
