Niki Tsongas

Representative Tsongas endorsed by Sierra Club

Representative Niki Tsongas today accepted the endorsement of the Massachusetts Sierra Club for her re-election in the Fifth Congressional District.

“I am proud to have the support of the Massachusetts Sierra Club and share in their goal of clean, sustainable energy, clean air, and clean water,” said Rep. Tsongas, a member of the House Committee on Natural Resources.  “The work of the Sierra Club is vitally important if we are going to leave our children a healthy planet.”

The Massachusetts Sierra Club has over 26,000 active members who are dedicated to the protection of the Earth’s natural environment.  The Massachusetts Chapter has active groups, statewide and a large active contingent in the Fifth Congressional District.

“Since her election, Representative Tsongas has listened, learned and led on important environmental issues,” said Phil Sego, Chair of the MA Sierra Club Political Committee. “She opposed offshore drilling and supported alternative energy production long before the Gulf of Mexico crisis. She’s repeatedly proven herself as someone willing to take the right stand, even when it isn’t easy.”

Representative Tsongas has made the environment a priority since first being elected in 2007 and is a founding member of the Energy and Environment Coalition that identifies opportunities to support and improve energy efficiency and renewable energy efforts.    In 2009, Congresswoman Tsongas joined the Natural Resources Committee which oversees legislation related to domestic energy production, National Parks, rivers, forests, oceans and wilderness areas.
