New England Quilt Museum

New exhibit opens at Quilt Museum on April 14.

Coming in mid-April to the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell, Massachusetts: a special exhibit of antique and modern quilts made with an unusual technique that originated in New England in the mid-1800s. This new exhibit is called One Foot Square, Quilted & Bound, and it opens on April 14, 2011.

Blocks in these quilts are individually layered, quilted and finish-bound before being whip-stitched together. During the Civil War, many women’s sewing circles used the technique to make quilts for wounded soldiers. Three of these Civil War quilts will be featured in the One Foot Square exhibit.

Join the NEQM for the official Opening Reception for One Foot SquareĀ and a lecture by Guest Curator Pam Weeks on Saturday, April 16th at 1 pm. A number of other special events are planned in conjunction with this exhibit, which concludes on July 11, 2011.
