LOWELL, MA —Looking for an energizing walk as well as exploration of an engineering marvel? The Pawtucket Gatehouse at the head of the Northern Canal was finished in 1847 completing Lowell’s complex power canal system. Join Lowell National Historical Park and Ranger Ken for a brisk walk to the Gatehouse and explore this symbol of Lowell’s engineering prominence. This program is offered on Sunday, August 23 at 11:00 a.m., just ahead of National Park Service Founder’s Day, the 99th anniversary of the NPS.

Meet at the Boott Cotton Mills Museum, 115 John Street, for this 3-mile round trip walk along the Lowell Riverwalk and the Northern Canal Walkway to the Pawtucket Gatehouse. The Gatehouse visit is free and no advance registration is required. We walk rain or shine!

In preparation for next year’s big centennial celebration, the National Park Service is inviting everyone to Find Your Park. To encourage people to discover everything a park experience can be, there is a fun list of 99 ways to Find Your Park, whether here in Lowell or at any of the over 400 national park units. Lowell National Historical Park is a great place to try many, including #3 – Be an urban hiker, #46 – Get in the know about H2O, or #98 – Take a Selfie along the Merrimack River. Visitors can share their park experiences with others by posting on social media with the hashtag #FindYourPark.
