River Hawks sweep Saint Michael’s 6-1 and 10-0; DePierro throws first no-hitter since 1999

Lowell, MA – The River Hawks swept Saint Michael’s in a Tuesday night double-header at LeLacheur Park by scores of 6-1 and 10-0. In the late game, Vinny DePierro (Tewksbury, Mass.) threw the first no-hitter in program history since Matt Marenghi on May 1, 1999 against Bryant.

Back in the win column, UMass Lowell improves to 24-6 with the non-conference sweep. The Purple Knights stumble to 4-13 overall with the pair of losses.

In the early game, Saint Michael’s hung the first number on the board as it pushed a run across in the top of the fourth. With runners on second and third, Collin Fishman (Bethesda, Md.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Tyler Wild (Quaker Hill, Conn.).

In the bottom of the fifth, the River Hawks leveled the score at 1-1 on a throwing error. The Purple Knights tried to turn a double-play and threw the ball away allowing Rob Noe (Lynnfield, Mass.) to round third base and score.

UMass Lowell broke the game wide open in the sixth inning. Rookie Dylan Flynn (Upton, Mass.) strode to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. Flynn smacked a three-run double to right-center, landing just shy of the warning track.

The lead was extended to 6-1 in the seventh as the River Hawks plated two more runs. The first score came home on an error, followed by an RBI triple off the bat of Cam Kneeland (Rowley, Mass.).

Starter Mike Calzetta (Lawrence, Mass.) picked up his fourth win of the year for seven solid innings on the mound. Calzetta allowed five hits and one run while striking out five batters. Mike Sloban (Merrimac, N.H.) and Dallas Nunes (Easton, Mass.) each pitched a scoreless frame to close out the ballgame.

In the late contest starter DePierro was untouchable, tossing a seven inning complete game no-hitter. The southpaw held the Purple Knights without a hit or a walk and struck out eight batters. The only player to reach base was due to an error.

The River Hawks jumped on the board first as Sean Burns (Colchester, Vt.) lined an RBI double into center field in the third inning. Saint Michael’s found itself in more trouble as the bases became loaded a few batters later. Mark Sanborn (Hopkinton, Mass.) dribbled an infield single to plate one run, then Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, Mass.) hit a RBI sacrifice fly to take a 3-0 lead.

Burns knocked in another tally in the fourth inning, pulling a line drive into left field to bring Matt Jacobs (Hudson, Mass.) home from second base. Then, in the fifth, Flynn and Connor Burnham (Harwich, Mass.) hit a pair of RBI singles and Sanborn scored on a passed ball to push the lead to 7-0.

UMass Lowell added three more runs in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run single from Kneeland.

With the double-header in the books, the River Hawks look to another home contest tomorrow afternoon as Stonehill comes to town for a 3:30 p.m. start.
