River Hawks Win Three Titles at Brown Invitational.

PROVIDENCE  – UMass Lowell captured three events to highlight its effort Sunday at the Brown University Springtime Track and Field Invitational at Brown Stadium.

The non-scoring meet attracted schools and athletes of all three NCAA divisions as well as many athletes representing postgraduate track and field clubs fromNew England.

In addition to winning three events, UMass Lowell athletes also emerged tops in six other events.

In a reversal of roles of sorts, senior Doug Caves (Oxford, MA) won the 200 meter dash in 21.78 seconds while freshman Evan White (Tewksbury, MA)captured the 400 meter dash in 48.77 seconds.

Both were well supported as freshman Craig Bennett (Milton, MA) placed fifth overall (second among Division II-III sprinters) in the 200 in 22.56 seconds; and freshman Scott Cannistraro (Littleton, MA) eighth in the 400 in 51.40.

Senior Robert Liekweg (Salem, NH) was UMass Lowell’s other winner as he captured the 400 meter hurdles in 53.66 seconds and led three River Hawks in the top five places. Senior Justin Oliver (Lowell, MA) placed fourth (second) in 55.81 seconds and junior Matt Blazon (Lowell, MA) fifth (third) in 55.95 seconds.

Blazon highlighted the afternoon with a second-place showing (first overall) in the 110 meter high hurdles in 15.54 seconds, just behind Wayne Seaton of the University of Rhode Island who won with a time of 15.14.

Senior William Nguidjoi (Lawrence, MA) emerged among the Division II-III field in two events. He placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 43 feet, 6.5 inches and fourth in the long jump with a leap of 20’ 9.0’’.

Junior Angus MacDonald (Methuen, MA) and sophomore Danny Wang (Haverhill, MA) also finished tops among the Division II-III field. MacDonald took fourth overall in the 1,500 meters in 3:52.11 while Wang placed sixth in the 800 meters in 1:54.29.

Also impressing was freshman Brendan Devlin (Weston, MA), who took third (first) in the 3,000 meters in 9:07.08. Freshman Adam Gilman (Hampstead, NH)placed fifth in 9:27.69.

Other results included that of freshman Mike Straub, who placed eighth in the discus with a throw of 113’ 4.0’’.

UMass Lowell enters the Northeast-10 Conference Championship Saturday at Stonehill College.
