UMass Lowell will honor the seven members of the university community who were among the victims of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 with a ceremony marking the 15th anniversary of the tragedy.

The ceremony will be held at the memorial to the victims, which is located on the banks of the Merrimack River on UMass Lowell’s East Campus. Called “Unity,” the unique circular-shaped memorial is inscribed with the names of those with ties to UMass Lowell who perished on Sept. 11, 2001: Douglas Gowell ’71 of Methuen; Robert Hayes ’86 of Amesbury; Brian Kinney ’95 of Lowell; John Ogonowski ’72 of Dracut, who was the pilot of American Airlines Flight 11; Patrick Quigley IV of Wellesley, husband of alumna Patricia Quigley ’86; Billerica native Jessica Leigh Sachs, daughter of UMass Lowell alumni Stephen and Karen Sachs ’69; and Christopher Zarba of Hopkinton ’79.

Originally dedicated in 2004, “Unity” was rededicated in 2011 for the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001. The memorial was commissioned by UMass Lowell and the Student Government Association and was designed by three students in a public art course taught by Prof. James Coates, who is scheduled to attend the ceremony.

Also expected to attend are members of the victims’ families, Chancellor Jacquie Moloney, state Sen. Eileen Donoghue, Lowell National Historical Park Chief of Interpretation and Education Linda Sopheap Sou, representatives of the city of Lowell and others from the community, along with university faculty, staff and students, including the UMass Lowell Air Force ROTC Detachment 345 Honor Guard.
