Lucille O’Neil, mother of NBA star Shaquille O’Neil, to give commencement address at Middlesex Community College

Commencement exercises for the approximately 1,100 members of the Middlesex Community College Class of 2011 will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 26, in Lowell Memorial Auditorium, 50 E. Merrimack St. The processional will begin at 9:30 a.m. in front of MCC’s Lowell campus City Building, located diagonally across from the auditorium.

This year’s commencement speaker is Lucille O’Neal, mother of the Boston Celtics’ Shaquille O’Neal and author of Walk Like You Have Somewhere to Go. In her new book, O’Neal shares her struggles and disappointments against the backdrop of her best memories and proudest accomplishments. Her story is proof that it’s never too late for a new beginning.

The mother of four, O’Neal is an active parent and grandparent. She is involved in numerous youth-oriented and community projects, including the United Negro College Fund, Reading is Fundamental, Scholastic America, Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Orlando, and Boys & Girls Clubs of Orlando. She also is President of the Mothers of Professional Basketball Players Association, Inc.

In 1997, O’Neal fulfilled her longtime dream of going back to school. She graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in business administration from the Adult Education Program at Bethune-Cookman University, and earned a master of arts in organizational management from the University of Phoenix.
