Bernice Fernando, a former slave, will tell the powerful story of her capture, torture, and escape from modern slavery. Born in Sri Lanka, Fernando was tricked into thinking she would be hired as a housemaid in Lebanon, then enslaved, beaten and starved until she was able to finally flee from captivity. Beatrice’s miraculous escape and recovery serve as the inspiration for her tireless efforts to abolish modern day slavery through the work of her organization, the Nivasa Foundation. By providing direct aid and advocacy to the victims of slavery, the Nivasa Foundation seeks to break the cycle of slavery and end this grave injustice.
