The Harlem Quartet will perform at UMass Lowell’s String Project Benefit Concert.

Music is in the air and this year the UMass Lowell String Project has something special to celebrate. As the 2010 fall season begins, the program marks its 10th Anniversary and according to Director and Founder Kay George Roberts, “Ten melodic years have led to an amazing string of accomplishments!”

To celebrate the milestone, Roberts and members of the String Project staff and advisory board are holding an all-star benefit concert in support of the students of String Kids, an educational music program for Lowell public school students born out of the String Project. With a mission to celebrate diversity in music, the program provides instructional classes and offers free concerts to the Lowell community.

“Most students are not able to pay the tuition costs and provide their own instruments,” says Roberts, “so scholarship support is vital to our program. It means a world of difference to the young students who wish to pursue music but may not have the opportunity to do so.”

Roberts and her staff are pleased to announce that this year’s special guests, the Harlem Quartet, will perform for the members of the UMass Lowell community. A masterful group of award-winning young musicians, the Harlem Quartet echoes the mission of String Kids, focusing on advancing diversity in classical music by highlighting works by minority composers and engaging young and new audiences.  Other special guests include the New England Orchestra and the recently formed Lowell Youth Orchestra.

The concert, to be held on Sunday, Nov. 14, will begin at 3 p.m. in Durgin Hall on South Campus. A VIP reception will immediately follow the concert at Allen House. Reservations are $100 per person for the concert and reception; $30 for the concert only. A portion of the registration fee is tax deductible. No tickets will be issued. Names will be checked off on a list at the door. Last minute tickets at the door.
