Sir Richard Friend, Cavendish Professor at the University of Cambridge and a fellow of St. John’s College in the United Kingdom, will present this year’s Konarka Tripathy Lecture on “Plastic Electronics: From Science to Industry.” Friend is world-renowned for his research into the physics and engineering of carbon-based semiconductors.

Each year a leading scientist in the field of materials science comes to UMass Lowell to present a lecture in memory of the late Sukant K. Tripathy, a UMass Lowell professor of chemistry and internationally recognized researcher of thin polymer films in electronics and optics. Tripathy passed away in December 2000 in a swimming accident in Hawaii while attending a conference.

A reception will be held at 3 p.m; the lecture will follow at 3:30 p.m.

The event is open to the public.
