United States Ambassador to Portugal Robert Sherman will present “U.S. and Portugal Relations in a Dangerous and Changing World,” a free event that is open to the UMass Lowell campus and public.

Appointed as ambassador in 2014, Sherman promotes economic development and trade between the countries, particularly in the biotech and life sciences sectors. He and his wife, Kim Sawyer, launched Connect to Success, a U.S. embassy program that provides professional mentors and business education to women entrepreneurs. He also works to strengthen Portugal’s engagement in NATO and international cybersecurity and counterterrorism efforts, in concert with other leaders around the world. Prior to becoming ambassador, Sherman founded the Boston office of international law firm Greenberg, Traurig.

The ambassador’s visit is presented by UMass Lowell’s Saab-Pedroso Center for Portuguese Culture and Research, the International Relations Club and the College of Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Established in 2013, the center is a resource for the public and the campus that presents events and programs with the goal of promoting an understanding of and appreciation for the cultures, literature and language of the Portuguese-speaking world – comprised of more than 230 million people, including a vibrant Portuguese-American community throughout the Merrimack Valley.
