Incoming freshman Julian Melchiori selected by the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft

LOWELL, MA– Incoming UMass Lowell hockey freshman Julian Melchiori (Richmond Hill, Ont.) was selected in the third round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Atlanta Thrashers on Saturday afternoon.

The defenseman becomes the 42nd River Hawk chosen in the NHL Draft and the fifth since 2000. The last UMass Lowell skater selected was forward Chris Auger (Belleville, Ont.), taken in the sixth round of the 2006 draft by the Chicago Blackhawks.

Melchiori scored 23 points in 39 games for the Newmarket Hurricanes of the CCHL this past season. In addition, he netted a pair of goals and nine assists in 19 playoff games.

Melchiori is the nephew of current NHL vice-president of hockey operations, Mike Murphy. Murphy played in 831 career games and, at one time, served as captain of the Los Angeles Kings.

The talented defenseman will join a River Hawk squad that finished 19-16-4 in 2009-10 and battled Hockey East Tournament runner-up Maine to three games in the opening round of the conference playoffs.

Season tickets for the 2010-2011 campaign are currently on-sale through the UMass Lowell Ticket Office. Contact Scott Donnelly at (978) 934-4988 or via email at scott_donnelly@uml.edu for more information. To visit the River Hawk ticket page, click here.
