Upcoming Events » UMass Lowell to Break Ground on $70 Million Innovation Center

June 8, 2010 11:00 am
Corner of VFW Highway and University Avenue on the North Campus, next to Alumni Hall, 84 University Ave.
Lowell, MA

Construction of the $70 million Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center will kick off with a celebration featuring Gov. Deval Patrick, Sen. Steven Panagiotakos, UMass Lowell Chancellor Marty Meehan and others who supported funding for the project.

When completed, the 84,000-square-foot facility’s dramatic façade will welcome those traveling north on a newly constructed University Avenue bridge, serving as a gateway to North Campus. Inside, the building will bring together experts from across campus and the region dedicated to the pursuit of advancing technologies for economic growth. The university hopes to raise another $10 to $15 million in private funds for laboratories and equipment. At its peak, the construction project will support about 130 jobs on site, as well as additional supplier jobs.

State officials who helped secure $35 million for the building project include Sen. Panagiotakos. He will be joined by Congresswoman Niki Tsongas, who, along with Gov. Patrick, has made it a priority project.

Anyone can register for the event by e-mailing Elaine Dalton, Elaine_Dalton@uml.edu. It is free and open to the public.
